Written for today’s short affair prompt at Section VII.

Summary: There’s a story behind Napoleon’s sapphire pinky ring that not even he fully knows about. [Implied reincarnation]

Illya and Napoleon’s Old West doppelgangers, Kid and Lionheart, are from my fic “The Moonlit Gulch Affair,” which this fic references. Cora and Leopold Solo are from a previous Short Affair piece.

So, it's been confirmed that Dan Green and Eric Stuart are returning as Yugi and Kaiba in the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh: Dark Side of Dimensions! No word on the others, but, let's face it, these were the most important ones for me, and were the dealbreakers on whether or not I was going to see it. The plot does fall flat and Kaiba's characterization suffers, but I am eager to hear them again, especially Eric, what with the Pokémon Renaissance going on right now. I'm also hoping Wayne Grayson can return as Joey, as well, but I'm definitely pleased with Dan and Eric coming back!

And speaking of Pokémon, some more adventures in regards to Pokémon Go--

Yesterday, pretty much all the gyms had been taken over by one Team Valor member who was using hacked Pokémon. It could be that since Niantic is cracking down on cheaters, he’s accepted that his account is going to be permabanned and was just determined to go out in a blaze of glory. He was gone today, so the ban probably caught up with him. At any rate, I was able to reclaim the science building gym for Team Mystic, and Albert got to rule the roost as he’s meant to–

(And he’s also dealing with the Drowzee Army, but you do what you gotta do…)

I was also able to temporarily claim the student union gym long enough to get the 20 coins I needed to get the bag upgrade–just in time, too, as I hit level 21 and got the hoard of bonus items.

Albert stayed at the gym for an impressively long time today–until midafternoon, which is a big deal since this is a high-traffic gym, and also since the students are coming back in en masse, as classes will be starting after another week, making the traffic even higher; there were three lures set off in the quad–I got a bunch of duplicates I needed to stock up on candies, and I hatched a Grimer, which I didn’t already have, so it’s been a good day!

Sigh. I got annoyed by a rather facetious post on tumblr today, jokingly asking, "Is there any THRUSH woman that Napoleon hasn't slept with?" I resisted the temptation to reblog with a reply of "Yes--all of them!" since I wanted to avoid unnecessary drama so I'll just vent here.

Faye was talking about this the other day, as well, and I fully agree--there is no way that Napoleon (well, TV!Napoleon, at any rate) ever went all the way with any of the women he flirted with (case in point, the girl from "The Hula Doll Affair" says, "He was such a gentleman--he slept on the couch!"). And, indeed, Kelsey and I are both convinced that he tries to maintain a reputation as a ladies man for undercover purposes--the "flirting" is all done only for the progression of the case; he "flirts" with the innocents to reassure them or get information, he "flirts" with the U.N.C.L.E. secretaries to keep his reputation up, and he "flirts" with the THRUSH women in the hopes of getting them on his side for escape routes and information.

It's what sets Napoleon Solo apart from James Bond. TV!Napoleon is not the serial bed-hopper than Bond is (movie!Napoleon sadly is, which is one of the multiple reasons why I had a low opinion of him when I saw the movie before the series). TV!Napoleon is a good, honorable man.

[Side note: I know the "Casbah Affair" --or as I refer to it, CasBLECH--contradicts this. But that episode is an outlier and shouldn't be counted because it's the only time that ever happens. I'd have expected that from movie!Napoleon, not TV!Napoleon, and this episode makes me so angry; as far as I'm concerned, I'm chucking it out of the timeline like I do the "15 Years Later" thing.]

Anyway, switching gears now more more Pokémon Go adventures--
Adventures!Collapse )

In addition to my own adventures, Pokémon Go is bringing Pokémon back to the public eye in levels that I haven't seen since 1999. It's really thrilling and nostalgic to see! Netflix has been promoting the first 2/3 of the Indio Arc from season one of the anime, and I've been rewatching some old eps--and seeing them in new ways as a result.

I rewatched Charmander's intro ep yesterday, and it's pretty startling to look upon the episode with a grown-up eye and realize that Charmander was suffering from pretty extreme abuse in regards to his original trainer, Damian, and that Charmander's attitude of remaining loyal towards Damian is sadly reflective of real-life abusive relationships. We don't know the extent of what Damian did to Charmander before he finally ditched him, but it was clear it was pretty bad (he flat-out brags, "No matter what I did to it, it still kept following me! I finally managed to get rid of it by promising to come back for it!") and the fact that Ash-tachi find Charmander deathly ill cements that. Luckily, Charmander breaks away from Damian and travels with Ash-tachi, but one would expect Charmander to have emotional scars and baggage from his time with Damian, and he does--only they don't manifest themselves until after he evolves to Charmeleon and Charizard, and then his behavioral problems/emotional baggage kick in--and one could argue that Charizard finally acts up because now he has the strength and power to be in control, and essentially becomes a control freak so as to ensure he's never put into a position like he was in with Damian ever again. Although it's intriguing to point out that Ash never once blames Charizard for his behavioral issues, but, rather, blames himself for not being a good enough trainer to earn Charizard's respect (in stark contrast with Damian, who would always blame Charmander). And it's after Ash saves Charizard's life a second time, and then flat-out confesses, "All I ever wanted was to be good enough for you," it puts things into perspective for Charizard, who only wanted to be good enough for Damien, but never was--but now it's Ash who doesn't think he's good enough for him. They're able to repair their friendship as a result, and Charizard becomes one of Ash's most trusted Pokémon again, like he was as a Charmander.

On an interesting side note, tho, in the intro ep, it's Brock who has the most invested in Charmander's well-being; he's the one who loses it when Damian starts bragging about mistreating Charmander, he's the one who leads the charge to rescue Charmander, and he's the one who doesn't budge an inch from the emergency room doors while Charmander is being treated. After Damian is chased off, Ash even admits that Brock was the one who deserves to keep him, but Brock insists that Ash keeps him instead. But the fact still remains that Brock had a large hand in saving Charmander (not that Ash and Misty didn't help, of course), and it's kind of sad that they never got to bond over that. Of course, Brock in general is the patron saint of lost potential after he started being dumbed down for the comic relief, and if it wasn't for the fact that I'm currently too busy with MFU, I would love to write a fic where Brock and Charizard get to bond for a bit--and perhaps give Charizard a chance to return the favor of lifesaving. Maybe someday...

Earlier today, I also rewatched the St Anne shipwreck episodes; aside from being a huge shout-out to The Poseidon Adventure, there's something else I noticed this time that I previously never gave much thought to before--after the ship capsizes and before Ash-tachi are trying to get their bearings and find a way of escape, there's a small scene where Officer Jenny throws some flowers for them after she finds out that they (along with Jessie and James) were unaccounted for when the ship went down. ...And that leads to a very heartbreaking scenario--if they are presumed dead like that, then it means that their families were probably notified. James's parents are a bit... out there, so there's no telling what they would think, and Jessie's mother was presumed dead long ago herself, but the show had already established that Ash, Misty, and Brock had concerned family members--for Delia, Ash is her only child and pretty much all she has--she'd be devastated; for Flint, Brock is his oldest child whom he left in charge of all of his younger siblings for years (who would not have taken the news well at all, either), and he would have to come to grips with the fact that his son died before be could finish making amends for that; and despite however bubble-headed Misty's sisters are, their episode established that they do care for her and the news would have been a horrible shock to them, as well. ...And now it suddenly makes a whole lot more sense that the episode immediately following this three-part saga, "Beauty and the Beach" (which was initially skipped in the US but then eventually aired after heavy editing) has Delia appearing in the city where Ash, Misty, and Brock end up after their harrowing experience. She was probably so desperate to see Ash again after being told that he was dead and then finding out that he was, in fact, alright. ...This is another fic idea I'd like to have done something with if I wasn't so busy with MFU. ...Maybe someday...

And, as a last note, although nothing to do with the show, it's been announced that in the upcoming games this November, Raichu is getting a new form that makes it Electric-Psychic! It's so thrilling to see my favorite Pokémon, largely ignored and sometimes outright vilified, finally getting some love!

I had a blurb request thing on tumblr and ended up writing a whole bunch; I'm only cross-posting the MFU ones here, but there are a few Hogan's Heros ones (here and here) and Doctor Who ones (here, here, and here), too.

All of these are crossposted to AO3, if you prefer reading there.

#1: Being on the run from THRUSH on a mountainside won't stop Napoleon from cooking for Illya.

Of Fish and a MountainCollapse )

#2: Illya has made a life-altering decision.

#3: It wasn't the first time Napoleon had ignored Illya's call on his communicator. But what Illya didn't know was that it could very well be the last time (angsty but with a happy ending).

And this week's Short Affair, also cross-posted to AO3--

So, I'm back at college now, looking after the birds again. I did catch a couple Clefairy over the weekend while I was back in my hometown, and Albert, my Pidgeot, and I temporarily were members of one of the local gyms in the clock tower--

Being back here, of course, means I'm dealing with the Drowzee Army again; although I did manage to catch a Kabuto the other day (which I didn’t already have), and then proceeded to take part in a three-way tussle for the science building gym between a fellow Mystic, two Valors, and an Instinct. The gym changed hands at least a dozen times in as many minutes, and I’m happy to say that, during one of those exchanges, Stockwell, my Wartortle that I had evolved from a Squirtle (his partner, Ivan, is still stuck as a Bulbasaur, and I became the leader; I hatched a Cubone yesterday who also helped me take the gym today, too--

The rest of the week looks pretty “meh” as far as the weather goes, but, hopefully, I’ll be able to have some time to play more…

And, if not, I have other games for my attention; I ended up getting Kid Icarus: of Myths and Monsters (the Game Boy prequel that Mr. Sakurai apparently removed from the timeline; I still got it because of my inner completionist) and Zelda II on the virtual console; KI:M&M is fun and cute, but Zelda II is every bit as notoriously difficult as its reputation claims–took me a grand total of five minutes to get my first Game Over. So if you hear any enraged screeching, it’s probably me trying to progress in Zelda II and failing miserably. I knew what I was getting into when I bought it; I wanted it because it was the only game in my favorite branch of the timeline (the Fallen Hero timeline) that I didn’t already own, so, again because of my inner completionist--and hey, it was only $5...

What are all the things I learned while being on my own for a week at an animal behavior conference? Well, just some of the things include…

* Always check your trash cans for opossums. This wasn’t a presentation, but a life lesson I learned the first morning when I stumbled upon this guy:

And no, I didn’t leave him there; two other attendees and I eventually figured out we could take the lid off and put a pizza box in as a ramp for him to get out; five minutes later, he’d vanished.

* Birds are really smart
* There is a mutual benefit for human and animal in a good, healthy human-pet relationship. Even just a few minutes of positive interaction has health benefits for both. Though the focus on this study was dogs and cats, there’s nothing to suggest that this doesn’t extend to birds and reptiles, as well.
* Birds (at least songbirds) can hear higher-frequency sounds better–in fact, they can’t hear bass tracks in a song at all, as it’s out of their range.
* Seriously, birds are really smart.
* A chimpanzee taking down a GoPro-on-a-drone with a stick is as hilarious as you’d expect it to be
* Monkeys know when they’re being treated unfairly/unequally and will react accordingly
* Dogs and wolves are also aware of the same, but while dogs will sit there and sulk in response, wolves will be aggressive for a short bit but then forgive and forget for the good of the pack
* Did I mention that birds are really smart? Corvid tricks vary by region, the Aesop fable of crows making the water level of a pitcher rise is an actual thing they can do, and though they are not corvids, zebra finches (the birds I work with personally) can do small-scale versions of certain corvid tricks.
* Naming your lab animals is not a very scientific thing to do. But everyone I spoke to does it anyway (the best one has to be Ringo the starling). Which makes me feel better about doing it.
* Also, everyone I spoke to gets attached to their animals. One person I met is plotting a way to smuggle three blue jays into her home after her experiment is over because the alternative is to put them down, and she isn’t about to have that.
* Finch!Napoleon and Illya were a huge hit with everyone I shared the videos with, including two Ivy League attendees who also work with zebra finches. Managed to get some insight from one of them as to why finch!Illya’s parents aren’t as successful breeders as Napoleon’s parents (for lack of a better description, “arranged marriages” between finches don’t work as well as “love marriages” do).
* Zebra finches can be affected by trace amounts of human hormones found in water–particularly the female hormones found in birth control pills that end up in the water system; they make males act less aggressive and alpha-y. I’m happy to say that the water for my finches appears to be fine and normal.
* And in case I didn’t say it enough times, birds are really smart!

(And though nothing to do with animals, I can also tell you that being a non-drinking introvert getting invited to a pub crawl is a surreal and awkward experience. And for those of you wondering, I went to the first place and ordered just a soda to keep everyone company and then made my excuses to leave after that.)

Still been playing more Pokémon Go all week! Taking over the science building gym had become a daily thing for me--I’ve reached the point where I actually am able to hold my own providing there aren’t multiple 1000+ CP rival ‘mons, so I’m able to claim the gym from the comfort of the bird room and get the bonus once per day. At least, I did; I came home yesterday since I have to go to a week-long conference starting tomorrow.

My hometown is a hotbed for Clefairy, apparently–they’re all over the place, but, alas, every one I encountered fled from me today. Still, it doesn’t mean that I didn’t have a successful venture--filled up some gaps in my Pokédex. And, for once, not running into a Drowzee was a breath of fresh air!

Those catches were enough to get me to level 15, so I used a Lucky Egg and evolved some of the Drowzee Army into a Hypno Army, evolved a Krabby to Kingler, a Bellsprout to Weepinbell, Stockwell the Squirtle to a Wartorle, Lee the Gastly to a Haunter and Albert the Pidgey to Pidgeotto and Pidgeot! Albert is now my strongest Pokémon--

…Isn’t he adorable (and yes, he’s named after Albert Stroller from Hustle)?

This will be my last entry for a week, as I’ll be away, but hopefully I shall return with more interesting tales!

I've been playing more Pokémon Go all week--it's become a daily thing now for me to go to the Oak Grove quad and look around (since I go there anyway twice a day to look after and train the birds) for a while, and at least see who has control of the science building gym. The foot traffic in the quad has been higher than I've ever seen for summertime--including Saturday and today.

So, after coming back home from India, I downloaded Pokémon Go a couple days ago, and I've been having a great time with it! I discovered that my science building is a gym and the weird rock sculpture outside the building that I never paid much attention to is a PokéStop (one of 6 in the Oak Grove quad all arranged in a circle--the cooldown time is such that you can make the full circle and be back at the beginning ready to go again--a whole bunch of people were going around in circles today, collecting items and eggs from the PokéStops--and some of them used lure modules, so the quad was crawling with Pokémon, and this isn’t even the busy time, either; at this point it’s just the students who are taking summer classes or the students who, like me, are doing summer research–just wait until fall when the rest of the students get back…) and since I go there every weekday, I can refuel on Pokéballs and other items.

My starter was a Pikachu (used a trick to get it), and upon reaching level 5, I joined Team Mystic, which is the Articuno-mascot team; the other two rival teams are Team Valor, with Moltres, and Team Instinct, with Zapdos, though there's a fan-made Team Harmony with Lugia as the mascot to fulfill the Shamouti Prophecy from the second movie ("Disturb not the harmony of Fire, Ice, and Lightning..."). The main rivalry is between Mystic and Valor, as only a few people are Instinct; I've likened it to Mystic being U.N.C.L.E. and Valor being THRUSH (based on the dialogue of the team leaders--Mystic's Blanche is all about wisdom and calmness, whereas Valor's Candela is all about power and "the pursuit of true strength"), with Instinct being a third organization that tries to get a foothold but only with limited success. That being said, I believe in a friendly rivalry; I, a Mystic, actually struck up a friendly conversation with a Valor member yesterday since we were both looking for a rare Tauros in the quad (which we both successfully caught!).

The rivalries are mainly about who controls the Gyms. Your team gets more prestige with the more gyms you own (leading to in-game currency rewards if you can hold a gym). The science building gym keeps going back and forth between Valor and Mystic; at the moment, Valor conquered all of our Mystic gyms (with Instinct clinging onto the one gym they controlled). We--Team Mystic--tried to stage a comeback today. I wasn’t very useful, seeing as though I’m only level 7, so I was pretty helpless in this attempt to reclaim the science building gym (which we did for about five minutes), though I did try, and for a bright and shining moment, I was a Gym Trainer (until Valor re-took the gym again five minutes later, but hey…)!

(Yup, I named my Hypno Partridge, after Barnaby Partridge from “The THRUSH Roulette Affair,” since he had a hand in brainwashing Illya, and so brainwashing, hypnosis, Hypno, etc, etc…)

But, at any rate, Gym prestige aside, the goal of the game is to catch 'em all, and I'm having fun with that, too! I've got all of the common ones (Pidgey, Rattata, Weedle, Caterpie, etc)--and the entire town is crawling with Drowzee for reasons I cannot comprehend; it's how I evolved Partridge into a Hypno in the first place (here, evolving works by getting a certain number of a particular Pokémon and trading them in for powerup candy to evolve the one you keep). I also caught a Gastly in my apartment (the building is a stone’s throw from a cemetery); I've caught others in and around my apartment, too, like a Krabby and a Meowth in the hallway and an Eevee and a Raticate outside (I spent 20 Pokéballs trying to catch the Raticate because it wouldn’t stay in the ball--ended up naming it STUPID RAT out of frustration). But the majority I've caught in the science building and the surrounding quad, like a Psyduck (named Ducky--what else would I have named him? XD), a Squirtle (named Stockwell), a female Nidoran (April), some Jynx (kept the strongest one--Angelique), a Magikarp, a Horsea, a Seel, the aforementioned Tauros and several repeats. There was a Beedrill, too, but it got away from me…

I also got a bunch of eggs from the PokéStops; one hatched into a Jigglypuff. I also hatched an egg yesterday, too, which was a Pikachu. It was a smaller-than-average Pikachu, so I named him Illya (my starter is Rai, named after my very first Pikachu in Pokémon Blue).

Hoping for more fun tomorrow--it’s supposed to rain or be very uncomfortably hot and humid for the next several days after that, so hopefully tomorrow will be a good day.

Oh, and speaking of Ducky! David McCallum has signed a two-year contract for NCIS, so I don't have to worry about Ducky getting written off for another two years! I was admittedly worried since he seemed to be hinting at retiring in a recent-ish interview, but it looks as though he's changed his mind, and I'm grateful for it!

So... I've been in India for almost a week now, visiting with family. It's fun, but I did have to make the difficult decision not to take part in the annual July Writing Prompts challenge at watsons_woes--I've taken part (and completed) the challenge for the past three years, but the fact that I'm visiting family half the month and then have to spend the other half of the month prepping for my presentation at a conference on animal behavior, coupled with the fact that my muse is 100% preoccupied with writing about Napoleon and Illya for when I do have the time to write, made me come to this decision. It is a pity, as I had wanted to explore Sebastian Moran founding THRUSH after Reichenbach and show Holmes and Watson getting help against THRUSH by Lionheart and Kid (Napoleon and Illya's old west counterparts from my "Moonlit Gulch Affair" fic), but I'm going to have to shelve those. Maybe next year... I am still doing the weekly short affair MFU challenges, though--one short story blurb a week is still doable!

Anyway, more new Pokémon have been revealed, as well as the English name of a new dog Pokémon that I had taken a liking to--Rockruff. I'd previously only known the Japanese name, Iwanko, and I had referred to it as such in the MFU/Pokémon crossover I did last month--I had Janet Jarrod (from "The Off-Broadway Affair") have one, along with a Flaaffy and Ponyta--they were, of course, meant to be a nod to the fact that Janet was played by Shari Lewis--with Flaaffy (a sheep), Ponyta (a horse), and Rockruff (a puppy) meant to be allusions to Lamb Chop, Charlie Horse, and Hush Puppy. Flaaffy and Ponyta had been pretty much decided, as there are no other sheep or horse Pokémon (well, there is Blitzle/Zebstrika, but those are zebras and not quite what I was looking for). I was originally going to go with Growlithe for the puppy as I do adore Arcanine, but then I saw Rockruff and decided that Rockruff was closest in resemblance to Hush Puppy (moreso than any of the other canine Pokémon options, and there are quite a few), so I went with with Rockruff despite not knowing the English name at the time--I went back and edited the name in the fic now that I finally found out. I do wonder if anyone caught what I was trying to reference with Janet's Pokémon team; Kelsey was the only one who got it so far...

...I am convinced that my childhood watchings of Lamb Chop are why Janet is my favorite innocent in MFU. It's always wonderful to have a familiar face greeting you in a new fandom; granted, Darren McGavin, John Banner, and Werner Klemperer were familiar faces, too, but they were playing villains, and I rarely get attached to villains (the only exceptions are Veran from The Legend of Zelda and Ivan Trigorin from The A Team--and even with Ivan, I do see him as redeemable, at least with the backstory I've given him. More on that later...). I have plans to bring Janet into the expanded version of The Eurovision Affair fic I'll be writing (the theatrical spectacle of Eurovision is her element, and she'd be able to help Napoleon and Illya out, in addition to being Illya's costume designer and choreographer), and a brief cameo in the post-Gurnius fic I'll be writing after the Baron of THRUSH arc is done. I've actually started outlining it. I also have plans involving two fics with a dimensional portal device--one involving my other favorite Innocent, Dr. Rutter/Willoughby from "The Suburbia Affair," and the other being a sequel to that, which would be a crossover with The A-Team, which involves Napoleon and Illya meeting Stockwell and Ivan, which would end with the completion of Ivan's redemption arc. I am very eager for that one, but I kind of have to do the one with Willoughby first, oops. And I have to do the Gurnius and Eurovision ones before that because I've been teasing both of those on tumblr and have a lot of people eager for those. Of course, first I have to finish the Baron arc before any of that!

And let's not even get into the short affair drabbles that I want to expand on in the future--the Midas one, the tornado one, the mine collapse one, the Veran one... Gah, so many ideas, so little time!

I’m going to be heading home soon for a week since my sister and her family are visiting, and after that, it’s off to India for an additional three weeks. So I won’t be online much this week (and for the days that I’m traveling internationally/recovering from jet lag, not online at all).

…Is it sad that I’m going to miss not seeing the finches for a month? *sigh* I’ll be swinging by the lab before I go to top off their food and water and say goodbye. My advisor, who runs the lab, will be looking after them, but I’m still going to miss them. ‘Cause I’m a sentimental dork like that…

But, on the plus side, I get to see Robert Vaughn’s face on the billboard on my drive home, so… there’s that.

Before I do go, though, here's another video I took yesterday of finch!Napoleon preening Illya!
